Abstract

BACKGROUND: The present work aimed to explore the impact of Alhagi ethanolic extract on the levels of liver enzymes, biochemical parameters and histological changes in male rats subjected to streptozotocin was investigated. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were randomly distributed in nine groups: intact control, diabetic control, 250 mg/kg Alhagi maurorum (AM), 500 mg/kg AM, diabetic + 250 mg/kg, diabetic+ 500 g/kg AM. RESULTS: The levels of AST, ALP and ALT enzymes in the group receiving streptozotocin (70 mg/kg) showed a significant increase relative to the control, while liver enzymes in experimental group (500 mg/kg) and albumin and total protein in the experimental group (250 mg/kg) relative to the group receiving streptozotocin showed a significant reduction. The level of ALP in experimental group (receiving 500 mg/kg Alhagi extract alone) showed a significant reduction relative to the control. Histological study revealed cellular necrosis, cellular inflammation and other changes was seen in the group receiving streptozotocin relative to the experimental and control groups. CONCLUSIONS: It seems likely that oral consumption of Alhagi ethanolic extract exerts its protective effects on the changes in biochemical factors associated with liver injuries induced by streptozotocin. Histological disorders such as cellular necrosis, cellular inflammation and other changes were decreased with minimum doses of extract Alhagi. © 2018 Edizioni Minerva Medica.
