Abstract

Hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia (HABP) is one of themost important acute complications that affects patientsadmitted to intensive care units (ICU) developing mainlyin patients receiving mechanical ventilation for more than48 hours with an incidence of 9–27%.1,2It is commonly causedby species of the Enterobacteriaceae family, non-fermentativeGram-negative bacilli, and Staphylococcus aureus.3,4The aware-ness of the HABP and antimicrobial resistance patterns arenecessary to improve hospital infection control system, select-ing appropriate empirical antibiotics, reducing duration of ICUadmission, decreasing costs of hospitalization, application ofeffective methods for preventing and controlling of HABP andfinally to reduce the mortality and morbidity rates in thesepatients.A cross-sectional study designed from January 2013 till Jan-uary 2014 included all 16 patients admitted to the ICU withHABP requiring mechanical ventilation for at least 48 hoursin a general hospital in south of Iran were included. Sampleswere cultured on blood agar & EMB agar. Colony counts of morethan 104cfu/mL were considered positive.
