Abstract

Abstract: The first episode of upper GI hemorrhage from esopageal varices is associated with a mortality rate of 30 to 50 and two thirds of these patients die within 1 year. This high mortality rate attests to the difficulty in the mamagement of acute variceal bleeding and the prevention of further bleeding. It Seems that the mortality rate of esophageal variceal bleeding at Shahid Mohammadi Hospital of Bandarabbas is obviously less than 30 to 50 Therefore, this cross-sectional study was conducted to define the mortality rate of esophageal variceal bleeding. so it can be useful in the management of esophageal variceal bleeding. All patients with document esophageal variceal bleeding hospitalized at Shahid Mohammadi Hospital of Bandarabbas from Farvardin 1, 1378 to Esfand 30, 1381 were included in this cross-sectional study. The Databases were achieved from patioent,s admitting files. There were 50 women and 61 men (mean age 56.8 years). All in - hospital deaths were considered as mortality rate and discharged databases were not considered as mortality rate. We performed Chi-square test and independent T-test for data analysis. We analyzed 140 episodes of esophageal variceal bleeding in 111 patients. There were 50 women and 61 men with a mean age of 56.8 years and a range of 13 - 80 years. Mortility rate of the first episode was 17 . Mortality rate of total episodes was 15 . Maximum of mortality frequency was in the range of 30 - 39 and 50 - 59 years. We found significant relationship between age and mortality. We couldn,t establish significant relationship between mortality and sex
